The city is largely dedicated to heavy industrial manufacturing including steel, heavy equipment and railroad engine/car construction. In 1908 Aurora officially adopted the slogan the "City of Light" due to it being one of the first urban areas in the United States to have an all electric street lighting system, going into operation in 1881. Although it still primarily a blue-collar city known for its factories, in recent years Aurora has been aggressively promoting overnight tourism as a more affordable alternative to Aurora proper.

As far as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is concerned, Aurora is counted as part of the Aurora-Naperville-Joliet, IL HUD Metro FMR Area, so its Fair Market Rents rating is integrated into those of Aurora and other surrounding cities. The Fair Market Rent for 2010 range from $710 for a studio apartment to $1,400 for a four bedroom one; however, the rents in Aurora are considerably cheaper than those in downtown Aurora. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2006-2008 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimates, Aurora has more than 16,000 apartments, constituting almost thirty percent of all housing units in the city.

Once known as a high crime area in the 1990s, Aurora has undergone a significant improvement involving a massive crackdown of crime and gangs. In the mid-1990s there was an average of thirty murders a year in Aurora, but that has been reduced to two, or well below the national average. Despite its reputation, Aurora has become a reasonably safe place to live. Another factor contributing to the lower rents in Aurora is the fact that most housing units were built before 1989, so most of the rental properties are considerably older.
