Chula Vista is truly one of the oldest cities in the United States. Archaeological evidence has demonstrated that humans have lived in the area for over 10,000 years. The first Spanish visitors came to the area in 1542 and established the area as prime grazing land for cattle and horse. The city of Chula Vista is located in present-day San Diego County. With 227,723 inhabitants, Chula Vista is California's 14th largest city. The cost of living is 18 percent higher than other cities, with housing costs being the driving force behind the added expense.

As Chula Vista is experiencing high levels of economic and population growth (23.8 percent), it can be assumed that the prices will only continue to rise. The high median household income that is also present will assist in pushing these rates up. In addition, construction is continuing in many outlying areas of the city that will lead to more rental properties being available. The majority of new constructions are near the Otay Lake Reservoir and may provide attractive options to potential renters.
