The city has been undergoing significant rejuvenation and revitalization recently, with mid-range condominiums, mini-malls, and large retail stores being opened in recent years.

Most of the households in Cicero are larger, so not surprisingly, most of the homes in Cicero are larger with one to three room residences being a small minority of the available places to rent. Almost half the residents of Cicero rent and the majority of rental properties cost less than $600 per month. Although there are some houses that rent for more, there has been very little new residential development since 1990 and the 2007/2008 real estate bust and recession has brought most new developments to a halt. Although there are a few higher end residences, most of Cicero remains lower middle class and therefore housing is more affordable.

In the 1980s and early 1990s Cicero had a reputation as being a rough area to live in, but coordinated efforts by local, state, and federal authorities as well as committed community involvement has really cleaned up the community today. Although Cicero still does not rank as one of the trendier parts of greater Chicago to live in, it is quite safe today and its proximity to downtown Chicago and the heart of the metropolitan area makes it a great place to rent a home, especially for people that do not make enough money to live out in the suburbs.
