Detroit is the largest city in Michigan and the tenth largest city in the United States. When you add in the suburbs then Detroit jumps up to the eight spot in largest metropolitan areas. The city population is just under a million people. Throw in the surrounding population and you have about four million people who call Detroit Metro, home. The city is a diverse mix of cultures and races, which have given rise to a wonderful mix of ethnic restaurants and colorful festivals which usually take place along the waterfront every weekend during the summer.

It can get pretty cold and snowy in Michigan and Detroit is no exception with an average summer high of only 58 degrees. Many corporations call Detroit home including Kmart, Stroh's Brewery. The Budd Company, American National Resources, to name just a few. If you like professional sports, then you will love the Detroit Tigers, the Lions football team, the Pistons basketball team and the world champion Red Wing Hockey team.

The overall cost of living in Detroit is below the national average making city living very affordable. The median price for an apartment is about $585 per month. It is possible in many areas to find good apartments in the $300 to $400 range. Real luxury, however still comes at a premium of about a $1000 per month, depending on the amenities.

Detroit's inner city, which is usually in the news for all the wrong reasons, has recently begun undergoing renovation thanks to new investment. Despite what you may have heard, it is probably the best place to explore for apartments. The suburbs outside of the city are constantly growing and changing, but bear in mind that the costs of apartment will be more expensive. Bargains are available in the metro region including Lapeer, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Saint Clair and Wayne counties.

If you're also searching for a job, manufacturing still rules the roost in Detroit. While the auto industry is still in decline, other manufacturing areas are rebounding. You might look outside the traditional and search the medical research, pharmaceuticals, and chemical industries. Other technology jobs are also available.
