Hamilton, Ohio, is a fairly small city of about 60,000 people situated near the greater Cincinnati metropolitan area, but outside of it. For most of its history Hamilton was an industrial city, however with the decline of American manufacturing, the city has been trying to redefine itself. Guided by its Vision 2020 Comprehensive Planning Project the goal has been to convert the city into a center of the arts, with a special emphasis on modern sculpture.

The city has declared itself the City of Sculpture, has created a public sculpture park and has enthusiastically worked to bring sculpture installations from around the country to Hamilton. In the meantime, Hamilton remains heavily influenced by, and dependent on, its proximity to the Cincinnati metropolitan area.

Reflecting its industrial past, most residents of Hamilton live in houses or condominiums, with only some twenty-seven percent of residents renting apartments. Despite lacking a large number of apartments, the rents are fairly inexpensive. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Fair Market Rent for 2010 ranges from $473 per month for an efficiency to $1,009 for a four bedroom apartment. The reason for the low rents is the comparatively low cost of living. As of December 2009, Hamilton had a cost of living index ranking of 81.9, which counts as low (100 is average).

When renting an apartment in Hamilton, or anywhere else in Ohio, keep in mind that Ohio has no minimum content requirements for rental agreements or leases in state law. This means that it is very important to read your lease carefully before signing it as rights and requirements that may be enshrined in law in other states may not be in Ohio.
