Albuquerque is the largest city in the state with almost a half million people who call it home. It is a and industrial and commercial transportation hub, rich in livestock, farm land and timber. Kirtland Air Force Base is here and is the center for special weapons development along with electronic and other research projects. The overall cost of living in Albuquerque is 18% below the national average, making it a very, very affordable city in which to reside. And there are more than 70,000 apartments for rent in this city. Average monthly rent for a one bedroom place is right around $600 per month.

Santa Fe is the state's capital and offers warm weather and 300 days of sunshine every year. There is a thriving art community and in fact is the third largest art market behind New York and Los Angeles. The bad news about Santa Fe is that it is expensive to live there, however there are plenty of New Mexico apartments for rent to choose from in this city. The city offers 25 complexes of 30 or more apartments and 7 complexes with 200 or more units. Most of these big complexes are located in the southern part of town. Average rents start at $525 for a small one bedroom and go up steeply from there. If you're on a tight budget, you may want to look for apartments in West Alameda and Guadalupe, which offer lesser priced apartments.

If you're thinking of moving to New Mexico, then you will need to figure out an answer to the official state question, which is, “red or green.” The color you choose will determine what kind of chili you will get with your dinner. Chili is the number one cash crop in New Mexico and a vibrant sign of a proud native culture.
