Although there are other employers and companies based there, especially those with a vested interest in staying politically active, Springfield had a much higher than average unemployment rate years before the 2007/2008 recession began and has had a steadily shrinking labor pool as well.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Fair Market Rent in the metropolitan area ranges from $437 for a studio apartment to $967 for a four bedroom. Inside the city limits more than ninety percent of residents rent their homes as opposed to owning them, with most private home owners being in the suburbs. Further, most of the rental properties within the city limits go for under $600 per month and are one bedroom apartments. These figures largely predate the advent of the 2008 recession, meaning that today rates are probably considerably lower.

Looking forward, Springfield has taken an aggressive stance on using modern technologies to allow for a more efficient and sustainable city. The Natural Resources Defense Council's (NRDC) Smarter Cities Project (formerly the Green Guide) ranked Springfield as the fourth most "efficient, responsible and sustainable" middle sized city in the United States. Very ecologically friendly, it has been suggested that Springfield may be able to take advantage of the trends toward more ecologically sound urban development in the future. In the meantime, it should be very easy to get a decent apartment at a decent price anywhere in the city.
