Dallas Texas Apartments for Rent

Looking for an apartment exclusively online can be quite tricky for Dallas, Texas. As a major American city and part of one of the largest metropolitan areas in North America, obviously there is a market for apartment finders in the area. However, this also means that all of the faux finder services online have extensive Dallas listings as well.

The problem with the general online apartment finders is that most of these are designed as money making websites, which means they have a vested interest in misleading people trying to find an apartment in favor of satisfying the requirements of the demands of whoever is paying them (advertisers, major landlords or developers, &c.). One of the best ways to get around this is to visit the website of the area’s local association of apartment landlords and management companies. More often than not these associations provide some sort of apartment finder resource that they consider dependable. However, this is not the case with the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas. Although they provide some basic resources for renters, these are primarily focused on proper renting and the legal obligations – for both the tenant and the landlord – under Texas law.

Of the rest of the apartment finders that come up in the first three pages of a Google search, it is impossible to differentiate between a legitimate local apartment finder company with a website and some general for-profit apartment finder website which probably has hopelessly outdated information and no real knowledge of the local market at all. If you absolutely have to find a locally based apartment locator, the best idea would probably be to go to the Dallas Yellow pages website (www.yellowpages.com) and find apartment locators with a physical address in or around Dallas. From there you can get the name and phone number and probably find the company’s website. Of course these companies may have an ulterior motive as well, but at least you can confirm that they are on the ground in (or near) Dallas with a physical office you can walk to, as opposed to being some exclusively online entity with no real information to offer based in India or the like.

If you are looking for affordable housing, it is somewhat easier, though reflecting the conservative traditions of northern Texas the process is not very user friendly and is still weighted significantly in favor of the property owners as opposed to people in need of assistance. The Dallas Housing Authority (DHA, www.dhadal.com) and the Dallas County government website (www.dallascounty.org) both provide good information about what types of subsidized (e.g. section 8), low rent (e.g. HOME or LIHTC houses), or no-rent (public) housing is available in the area. It should also be kept in mind that Dallas County is just one of several counties and municipal authorities in the greater metropolitan area.

Dallas also boasts a large number of charities – primarily Christian churches – that provide a number of affordable and charitable housing options outside of the government framework. Reflecting the conservative idea that charity should be privatized and operated by ‘faith based” groups, these organizations have received a lot of resources in Dallas and offer a lot of diverse projects and programs for people in need of housing assistance.
