What is the Average Size Apartment Rental?
Those on the hunt for a new apartment are often curious to know the average size of a rental unit or apartment. Based on collected demographic information in the United States of America, the average size of an apartment rental is approximately 847 square feet. This, however, should not be taken as the exact number one should strive for when choosing an apartment. Many factors such as the number of bedrooms the apartment has and where it is located also play a role in determining what is “average” to a particular area or location.
In New York City, for example, the “average” apartment size really depends on one’s budget. Even the tiniest, dirtiest studio apartment in Manhattan would be quite expensive by most of the general population’s standards, while a penthouse or large New York City dwelling would be astronomical. Fees for parking and other amenities are often not included in one’s rent in the city, so these expenses should also be taken into consideration. In short, what is average in New York or in any large city is probably not what would be considered average in a small town or a rural setting.
The size of one’s family should also be taken into consideration when determining what is the average sized apartment and whether or not one needs to rent an “average” sized apartment. If the renter in question is a single individual, he or she would not want to compare the size of his or her prospective apartments to the size of apartments meant to house couples or large families. Trying to “keep up with the Joneses” and rent an apartment just because it is the average or above average size is not at all practical, particularly if one will not or does not need all the space the apartment in question provides.
Budget is also important when considering apartments. The average apartment for someone on a large budget will probably not be the average apartment for someone who only makes minimum wage. Instead of worrying about whether or not one’s apartment is average, renters must take into consideration their budgets and income and what they will be able to realistically afford.
In short, what is truly important is finding an apartment that works for an individual’s lifestyle, not an apartment that allows one to be on the same “level” as most of the rest of the world. A beautiful, average sized apartment might look nice, but it won’t do the renter any good if it is out of his or her price range. Renters should, however, be aware of what apartments in the size range he or she is seeking are going for in the particular area where the renter resides or will reside. Knowing this information will keep individuals from paying much more for rent than they should be paying, or paying the same amount for a not so nice apartment as they could pay for a much better one. Outside factors, such as the amenities or services one’s apartment or apartment complex offers, its proximity to work or other activities the renter enjoys, what, if any utilities are included, and the like are also important things to consider when choosing a rental.
