What Should I Discuss with my Landlord before Signing?

If you have ever rented an apartment, or if you plan to, it is very important to know as much as possible about the lease between the tenant and the landlord. This works to protect both parties that are entering the rental agreement. However, it is always a good idea for the tenant to discuss certain things with the landlord prior to signing the lease.

One of the things that would be a good topic to discuss with the landlord is the length of the lease. If for whatever reason you do not intend to rent the apartment for at least a year, there is a possibility the landlord may agree to renting the apartment for a much lesser amount of time. This is one of those things that you should really discuss with your landlord ahead of time, prior to signing the lease.

Also, many times the landlord will request the rent to be paid by the first of the month. Many people may not get paid at this specific time, so it is a good idea to discuss this with the landlord. In many instances if you need to rent any apartment for six months or less, it is a good idea to discuss this with your landlord. They may or may not work out a deal with you, but it certainly does not hurt to talk to them about it.

In addition, it is always a great idea to get to know your landlord. Of course, you don’t have to be best friends, but at least meet your landlord and make certain you have contact information you will need in the event an emergency comes up. There is nothing worse than not having water, and not being able to contact your landlord.
